What are bio-identical hormones (BHRT) and are they safe?

“They’re hormones derived from plants and chemically identical to human hormones,” Dr. Randy Birken, founder of Birken Medical Aesthetics of The Woodlands said.  “While no scientific study has proven to show that BHRT are safer than synthetic hormones, intuitively, they seem to be.”

Patients are evaluated by testing for estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, as well as metabolic hormones such as thyroid and adrenal.

“Most hormones decrease with age leading to fatigue, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, and diminished libido,” Dr. Birken said.  “Most of our patients on BHRT report a renewed energy, focus, and vitality.
